St. Pancras Old Church

Pancras Rd, London, Camden Town NW1 1UL, UK – 020 7424 0724

It was the grave of Mary Wollstonecraft that first brought me to the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church, and it quickly became one of my favourites. It manages to be both easy to reach from the nearby main train stations and seemingly cut off from the rest of the world as the churchyard is shrouded in trees. It's rich in history and seems well taken care of. If you need some quiet time, this is one place to consider.

Beautiful small church in a very nice park, worth a visit

St Mary Woolnoth

1 King William St, London EC3V 9AN, UK – 020 7626 9701

Brooding, somewhat squat, but beautiful in its way. There has been a church here for 1000 years. Burial place of James Newton, who wrote a little tune called 'Amazing Grace'.

A delicately imposing and elegant masterpiece by Hawksmoor. Design seems to loom broodingly in graceful bulk. Church seems to remain fairly active, being open for community purposes, but the draw here is the perfection of its design. The only complaint is the incessant traffic often blocking the church from different vantages.

One of the first and one of the best of the church finding websites.

Most churches are listed although some have not entered a great deal of detail about themselves. The churches at the top of the list have the fullest entries. You will need to click FOR MORE for the rest.

You should have no trouble finding churches within the London area.
'Church Near You' is a Church of England directory but other denominations can also register free. Entries go from a basic name and address to comprehensive details about the churches listed. However very many churches are not listed at all so you may need to go to Find A Church to see more churches around the London area.
The Thompson guide lists places of worship for every denomination, creed and faith. You just see the name and address plus an email button in some cases. The Thompson guide has truely excellent maps!
